What are the differences between single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic modules

The differences between single-mode and multi-mode optical modules vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but overall, there is a clear distinction between single-mode and multi-mode optical modules. Next, we will lead you to fundamentally distinguish between these two.
1. Different wavelengths
The working wavelength of multi-mode optical modules is generally 850nm, while the working wavelength of single-mode optical modules is generally 1310nm and 1550nm.

2. Different transmission distances
Single mode optical modules are commonly used for long-distance transmission, with transmission distances up to 150 to 200km. Multimode optical modules are mostly used for short distance transmission, and can be used for transmission distances below 2km.

3. Different types of optical fibers
According to the transmission mode of optical modules in optical fibers, optical fibers can be divided into single-mode fibers and multi-mode fibers. Multimode fiber (MMF) typically has a diameter of 50/125 μ M or 62.5/125 μ m. Single mode fiber (SMF) with a diameter of 9/125 μ M.

4. Different light sources
The light source of a single-mode light module is an LD or LED with narrow spectral lines, while the light source of a multi-mode light module is a light-emitting diode or laser.

5. Different application ranges
Single mode optical modules are often used in lines with relatively high transmission rates and relatively long distances, such as in urban area network construction. Multimode optical modules are commonly used for short distance transmission, and transmission with multiple network nodes and joints is also very suitable for the application of multi-mode optical modules.
In addition, multimode devices can only operate effectively on multimode fibers, while single-mode devices can operate on both single-mode and multimode fibers, but single-mode devices cannot guarantee effectiveness on multimode fibers.

6. Different prices
Although single-mode fibers are cheaper than multimode fibers, single-mode optical modules are much higher than multimode optical modules.
