What are the differences between optical modules of different wavelengths

Dec 03, 2023 Leave a message

1. The transmission distance is different, which is consistent with the difference between single-mode and multi-mode.
The transmission distance of 850nm optical modules is generally within 500 meters. The transmission distance of 1310nm optical modules is generally 2-40 kilometers. The transmission distance of 1550nm optical modules is generally 40-120 kilometers. Of course, the transmission distance is also related to the luminous power, transmission rate, and reception sensitivity of the optical module. Generally, the lower the receiving sensitivity, the farther the transmission distance.

2. Dispersion and loss are different.
In practical applications, 1310nm optical modules generally calculate link losses at 0.35dBm/km, while 1550nm optical modules generally calculate link losses at 0.20dBm/km. The calculation of dispersion values is very complex and is generally only used as a reference.
